Methodology
Every derived number and calculator result on this site follows the formulas below. If you find an error, please tell us.

Principles
- Reported vs calculated. Figures labelled with an issuer source (SEC yield, trailing yield, NAV, expense ratio, returns, distributions) are reported by iShares and shown unchanged. Figures we compute are labelled as ours.
- History vs projection. Historical results use actual distributions. Forward-looking estimates hold your chosen assumptions constant and are always labelled as estimates.
- No hidden rounding. Calculations use full precision; rounding happens only when values are displayed (currency to cents, percentages to 2 decimals, per-share distributions to 4–6 decimals).
- Tested. Calculator functions live in one module with automated unit tests, including edge cases and a cross-check against the issuer’s reported 12-month trailing yield.
Yield measures
- 30-day SEC yield and 12-month trailing yield: reported by iShares, net of fees.
- Annualized latest distribution (our calculation) = latest distribution per share × 12 ÷ latest NAV.
- Trailing 12-month distributions per share (our calculation) = sum of distributions with an ex-date in the 365 days ending on the latest ex-date.
Income calculator
Shares = amount ÷ price (floored if whole shares only). Annual income = shares × price × yield. Average monthly income = annual ÷ 12; daily = annual ÷ 365. Required investment = target monthly × 12 ÷ yield.
Limitations: assumes a constant yield; actual monthly payments differ with rates, days in the period, and occasional extra year-end distributions. Pre-tax; ignores trading costs.
Dividend calculator
Payment = shares × distribution per share. Historical total = Σ distribution per share × shares for each ex-date where purchase date < ex-date ≤ end date (you must own shares before the ex-date). Share count is held constant.
DRIP / projection
Monthly simulation. Month 1 invests the initial amount. Each later month: contribution buys shares at the current price; distribution = shares × price × yield ÷ 12; tax at the chosen rate is withheld; the remainder is reinvested at the same price (or paid out); the price then changes by (1 + annual change)1/12 − 1.
Limitations: constant yield and price path; no trading costs; taxes simplified to a flat rate on each distribution.
After-tax yield
Effective state rate = state rate × (1 − exempt share). SGOV after-tax yield = yield × (1 − federal − effective state). Taxable-equivalent yield = SGOV after-tax yield ÷ (1 − federal − state). The default exempt share is the issuer’s published US government income percentage (95.14% for 2025).
Limitations: ignores the SALT deduction, AMT, NIIT (unless added to the federal rate), local taxes and state-specific rules.
Data handling
Data is collected by an automated pipeline, validated (schema, plausible ranges, duplicate dates, component sums, and a trailing-yield cross-check) and only then published. If validation fails, the previous snapshot stays live and every page continues to show its true as-of date. Pages show a warning when data is more than 4 days old. See data sources.
