How many SGOV shares for a monthly income target?

Using the 30-day SEC yield of 3.76% and a share price of $100.66 (both as of Oct 22, 2026), these are the approximate investments needed for common monthly income goals before taxes.

Estimated SGOV investment required for a target average monthly income
Monthly incomeAmount to investShares (rounded up)
$100 / month $31,915 318
$500 / month $159,574 1,586
$1,000 / month $319,149 3,171
$2,000 / month $638,298 6,342
$5,000 / month $1,595,745 15,853

Formula and assumptions

Shares = investment ÷ share price (rounded down if “whole shares only” is checked).

Annual income = shares × share price × annual yield. Average monthly income = annual income ÷ 12.

Amount for a target = target monthly income × 12 ÷ annual yield.

  • Yield is held constant. In reality SGOV’s yield tracks 0–3 month Treasury bill rates and can change month to month.
  • Average, not a specific payment. SGOV pays monthly, but months with more days, or a year-end extra distribution (there were two payments in December 2025), make individual payments uneven. The latest actual payment was $0.300547 per share on Oct 6, 2026.
  • Pre-tax, no trading costs. The SEC yield is already net of the 0.09% expense ratio, so do not subtract it again.
  • No reinvestment. To model reinvesting distributions, use the DRIP calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SGOV pay per month on $10,000?

At the current 30-day SEC yield of 3.76%, $10,000 in SGOV would produce roughly $31.33 per month on average (about $376 per year) before taxes. Each actual monthly payment differs because it depends on the interest the fund’s T-bills earned that month and on the number of days in the period.

How many SGOV shares do I need for $1,000 a month?

About 3,171 shares, or roughly $319,149, using the 3.76% SEC yield and a $100.66 share price. If yields fall, you would need more; if they rise, fewer. Use the “target income” mode above with your own yield assumption.

Which yield should I use?

The 30-day SEC yield is the most forward-looking standardized figure because it reflects what the portfolio is earning now, after expenses. The 12-month trailing yield reflects what was actually paid over the past year, which lags when rates change. Using the latest payment × 12 is quick but noisy because months have different lengths. See SGOV yield explained.

Is SGOV income guaranteed?

No. SGOV’s distributions follow short-term Treasury rates, which change when the Federal Reserve changes policy and with market conditions. If T-bill yields fall, SGOV’s income falls within weeks because its holdings mature and are replaced quickly.

Does this calculator include taxes?

No, results are pre-tax. SGOV distributions are generally taxed as ordinary income federally, while most of the income may be exempt from state income tax. Use the after-tax yield calculator for that.
